When the Riviera goes quiet for winter, the season moves to the mountains. Three resorts set the tone: St. Moritz in the Engadin valley, Gstaad in the Bernese Oberland and Courchevel in the French Alps. Each has its own character, and each rewards planning well ahead for the peak weeks of late December, February and early spring.
St. Moritz: sport on the frozen lake
St. Moritz is where Alpine winter society began, and its calendar still revolves around the frozen lake. The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz returns from 22 to 24 January 2027, with High Goal matches on the ice and a black-tie gala on the Saturday evening. In February, White Turf celebrates its 120th anniversary with international horse racing and skijoring on the lake, with Racing Days on 7, 14 and 21 February 2027. The season closes with the Engadin Skimarathon on 14 March.
Gstaad: discreet and chalet-led
Gstaad is known for its car-free promenade, traditional wooden chalets and a deliberately low-key atmosphere that has long attracted families who value privacy. Many visitors rent a chalet with staff for the season’s key weeks rather than staying in a hotel.
Courchevel: ski-in, ski-out in the French Alps
Courchevel 1850 sits at the heart of the Trois Vallées, one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. Its chalets and hotels open directly onto the slopes, and its altiport, with one of the most demanding runways in Europe, allows arrival by helicopter or specialised aircraft.
Getting there
For St. Moritz, Engadin Airport at Samedan serves private aviation, while Zurich is a scenic drive or train journey away. Gstaad is around two hours by road from Geneva, with a small airfield at Saanen. Courchevel is reached from Geneva or Chambéry by road, or directly by helicopter to the altiport.
Dates are as published by the organisers and may change. Always confirm with the official source before booking.
