Private concierge or luxury travel agent: which do you need?

A clear comparison of a private travel concierge and a luxury travel agent: what each does, how each is paid, and how to choose the right one for the way you travel.

The real difference
Scope, continuity and whose side the incentives are on

Both will find you a beautiful hotel. Both can arrange a car at the airport. So why do some travellers use a luxury travel agent, others a private concierge, and many both? The difference lies less in what they can book than in what they are for, and how they are paid.

What a luxury travel agent does

A good travel agent is a specialist in trips. They know hotels, cruise lines and tour operators, hold relationships that can bring upgrades or amenities, and package a holiday from flights to transfers. Many are members of hotel programmes that add breakfast, credits or early check-in.

Most agents are paid mainly by commission from the hotels and operators they book, sometimes with a planning fee on top. The relationship tends to be trip by trip: you call when you want to go somewhere.

What a private concierge does

A private concierge works for you rather than for a trip. Travel is a large part of it, but so are the restaurant on a Tuesday, the chauffeur for a board meeting, the school-holiday villa, the event day, the house opening for the summer. The concierge learns your preferences and carries them from one request to the next.

A concierge is usually paid by a membership or a fee, which means its income does not depend on which hotel you choose. At ATLAS MAISON, for example, you book and pay suppliers directly, and our service charge is shown separately in every proposal.

How to choose

  • You take two or three big holidays a year and enjoy planning them together: a specialist travel agent may be all you need.
  • You travel often, for work and pleasure, and want one person who knows how you like things done: a concierge saves more time.
  • Your requests go beyond travel, such as dining, events, household suppliers or business introductions: that is concierge territory.
  • You want advice without a commission behind it: choose a fee-based service and ask how it is paid.

Using both

The two are not rivals. Many of our members keep a trusted agent for a particular kind of trip, such as a safari or a cruise, and use the concierge for everything else, including the transfers and dinners around the agent’s booking. A good concierge will tell you honestly when someone else is better placed to help.

Concierge or travel agent?: questions

What is the difference between a concierge and a travel agent?

A travel agent specialises in booking trips and is usually paid by supplier commissions. A private concierge looks after your travel and the arrangements around it on an ongoing basis, and is usually paid by membership or fees.

Is a concierge more expensive than a travel agent?

A concierge charges a membership or fee, while an agent is often free to use because suppliers pay commission. Which is better value depends on how often you travel and how much of your time the service saves.

Can a concierge book package holidays?

A concierge can plan the same trip, but at ATLAS MAISON you book each supplier directly in your own name, so your contract is with them rather than with a package organiser.

Can I use a concierge and a travel agent together?

Yes. Many clients keep a specialist agent for particular trips and use a concierge for everything around them.
