Superyacht charter in the Mediterranean: how it works
Seasons, contracts, the APA and crew gratuities: what first-time charterers should know.

A week aboard a crewed yacht is one of the most private ways to see the Mediterranean: a different anchorage every day, meals prepared by your own chef, and no fixed timetable. Understanding how a charter works makes the experience smoother from the first enquiry.
When and where
The Western Mediterranean season runs broadly from May to October, with July and August the busiest and most expensive months. The French Riviera, Corsica, Sardinia and the Balearics are classic cruising grounds; Croatia, Greece and the Turkish coast offer longer distances, quieter bays and a more relaxed pace. June and September often combine warm water with calmer anchorages.
How charters are booked
Most crewed yacht charters are arranged through a charter broker and governed by a standard contract, very often the MYBA charter agreement. The broker helps match the yacht and crew to your group, negotiates terms and holds funds in line with the contract.
What the price includes
The charter fee usually covers the yacht and its crew. On top of this, most Mediterranean charters require an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), commonly around 30 to 40 percent of the charter fee, which pays for fuel, food, drinks, berthing and other running costs. The captain accounts for the APA during the trip and any balance is returned. VAT on charters depends on the country and the itinerary.
Crew and gratuities
Crew gratuities are not usually included. A gratuity is customary at the end of a charter, often in the range of 5 to 15 percent of the charter fee, depending on the service and local custom.
Planning well
The best yachts for July and August are often committed many months ahead, especially around events such as the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes. A preference sheet, sent before you board, lets the crew prepare menus, wines, water toys and the pace of your days.
