Dubai attracts families from around the world for its safety, connectivity, climate and quality of life. A move goes most smoothly when residency, housing, schools and practicalities are planned together rather than one after another.

Residency

There are several routes to UAE residency, including employment, company formation and long-term options such as the 10-year Golden Visa. Property investors commonly qualify for the Golden Visa by owning UAE property worth at least AED 2 million. Rules on mortgaged and off-plan property, family sponsorship and documentation are set by the authorities and change from time to time, so applications should always be checked with the official channels or a licensed adviser.

Choosing a neighbourhood

Families often look at Emirates Hills, Jumeirah, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Hills and Arabian Ranches for villas and gardens, while Downtown and DIFC suit those who prefer apartment living close to the business district. Commuting times, school locations and access to the beach shape the decision as much as the home itself.

Schools

Dubai has a wide choice of international schools following British, American, International Baccalaureate and other curricula. Places at the most popular schools are limited, so it is wise to register early, often before housing is finalised. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) publishes school inspection reports that many families consult.

The first months

Practical steps include Emirates ID registration, medical tests for residency, opening bank accounts, driving licence conversion, utilities and health insurance. Planning arrival around the cooler months, from October to April, makes settling in more comfortable.

Advice

Residency, tax and corporate matters should always be handled with licensed professionals. A coordinator can keep the many steps moving together, but regulated advice must come from the right specialists.
