The French Riviera season: dates to plan around
Cannes, Monaco and the coast have a handful of weeks that shape everything else. Here is how to plan around them.
The Côte d’Azur is busy for most of the summer, but a few events concentrate demand for villas, hotels, tables, cars and helicopters into very short windows. Planning around them early makes the biggest difference.
May: Cannes Film Festival
For roughly two weeks in May, Cannes fills with the film industry and the press. Hotels on and near the Croisette, restaurant tables and drivers are in heavy demand. If you are visiting for other reasons, consider staying a little outside Cannes, or visiting before or after the festival.
Late May – June: Monaco Grand Prix
Monaco’s Formula 1 weekend is one of the most sought-after events on the calendar. Grandstand seats, terraces overlooking the circuit and yachts in the harbour are typically arranged months ahead. Transport is the other challenge: roads close, so helicopter transfers from Nice and good timing matter.
July – August: peak summer
Peak season along the coast, from Antibes to Saint-Tropez. Villas are usually let by the week, beach clubs fill quickly at weekends, and the coast road can be slow. Days on the water are often the most relaxed way to see the coast.
September: Monaco Yacht Show
A quieter, warm month with a focused event for the yachting world. September is also one of the loveliest times to visit the Riviera, with fewer crowds and a warm sea.
Event dates vary each year. Tickets and hospitality should always be bought through authorised sellers.
